Honesty and Integrity In Real Estate

REALTORS® sometimes get a bad reputation, and it’s not entirely undeserved. The barrier to entry in real estate is low, leading to a wide range of skill levels, ethics, and professionalism. But there are plenty of exceptional agents out there, and most I work with daily are outstanding professionals. When the emotions of a sale are high, having honesty and integrity in real estate will guide our decisions.

When choosing your agent, honesty and integrity should top your list. In today’s Johnson County market where inventory is tight (~2.2 months supply), homes sell quickly (~35 days), and values are rising 5-7%—these qualities directly impact your success. Here’s why they’re the cornerstone of my practice.

My Foundation: Early Lessons in Trust

As a kid in the Boy Scouts of America, I earned the rank of Eagle Scout. The Scout Law’s 12 points—trustworthy, loyal, helpful, friendly, courteous, kind, obedient, cheerful, thrifty, brave, clean, and reverent—shaped me profoundly.

“Trustworthy” always stood out. It means doing what you say you’ll do, even when no one’s watching.

A Book That Changed My Perspective

“Be impeccable with your word.”

The 4 Agreements by Don Miguel Ruiz

As a teenager, I read The Four Agreements by Don Miguel Ruiz. This Toltec wisdom boils down to four principles: Be impeccable with your word, don’t take anything personally, don’t make assumptions, and always do your best.

The first agreement: “Be impeccable with your word” is foundational. Without it, the others crumble. It resonated deeply and guides how I serve clients today. Honesty and integrity in real estate is everything.

The Hard Truth in Real Estate

True honesty goes beyond avoiding lies. It means delivering what clients need to hear, not just what they want. I’ll tell you if a home is overpriced, if repairs are worth it, or if we’re better off walking away. Because in Real Estate, it’s often the questions you never knew to ask that cost you.

It also means admitting when I don’t know something—and finding the answer fast. You deserve transparency, especially with your largest investment.

The REALTOR® Difference: A Higher Standard

Not all agents are REALTORS®. In Kansas and Missouri, anyone with a license can practice real estate, but REALTORS® voluntarily join the National Association of REALTORS® and adhere to a strict Code of Ethics.

This code governs interactions with clients, other agents, and the public. Violations can lead to fines, suspension, or expulsion. In a relationship-driven industry, this accountability matters. That’s why I choose to be a REALTOR®.

Reputation: The Hidden Factor in Your Deal

Agent reputation among peers is crucial, yet it’s often overlooked by clients.

What if your agent has a reputation of dishonestly, unbeknownst to you? How might that impact the offer you just submitted on your dream home? What if your agent has a history of being difficult or unreliable with other agents? What if that causes another agent to steer their clients elsewhere?

These issues can quietly sabotage your chances without you ever knowing. That’s why interviewing agents and checking references are essential.

Let’s Talk—Honestly

Whether you’re buying, selling, or investing in Kansas City’s dynamic market (or building a rental portfolio), I prioritize straight talk and ethical guidance to get you the best outcome.
